Smooth Finish Concrete for Interior Floors, Basements and Warehouses

WPD and its concrete division, Oregon Concrete Company, offer many types of concrete finishes, and this is what a smooth finish concrete project entails. After the fresh concrete is poured, leveled and floated to push down large aggregate and bring the cement paste to the top, we make sequential manual or power steel-trowel passes as the slab sets to create a dense, flat and level surface. This method is most commonly used for outdoor patio floors, interior floors, basements and commercial warehouses where a clean appearance and easy maintenance matter. We recommend brush or exposed aggregate finishes for patios, driveways, walkways and steps, as a smooth finish can be somewhat slippery when wet. Paver driveway rebuild

I have had two paver driveways redone to accommodate the growth of existing trees. Fidel and crew did beautiful work. They completely pulled up the pavers, reconfigured the level, and placed every paver back with great care. I can’t recommend this company enough for their great work.

We had Western Paver and Design redo our backyard, including a retaining wall and extending our patio to create more usable outdoor space and it turned out absolutely perfect! It’s been two years since the project was completed, and everything still looks exactly like the day it was finished. Wonderful experience working with Western Paver Design! Austin was very helpful with the entire process from quote through final walk through until we checked all the boxes. German and his team were hardworking, friendly, and skilled. German’s craftsmanship and design aesthetic really shined with a custom latching gate under the deck, framed lattice panels, and the picture framing on the deck. Love the permeable pavers to help with my drainage issues and all the quality materials and construction. This is a major upgrade to my house and I’m pleased with the investment. Herringbone paver driveway

Our neighbors redid their driveway recently, and it was so beautiful we asked them who they used. It was Western Paver Design. 80 ft retaining wall

Western Paver Design just replaced roughly 80 feet of retaining wall. They did an excellent job. They actually over built it. It’s twice as sturdy/stable as the prior one and I’m pretty sure that it could even withstand an earthquake. The finish design is very nice and they clean everything up and are extremely respectful of the property.

What is a smooth finish on concrete?

It's a dense, flat surface made by floating the fresh concrete to push down the large aggregate and bring cement paste to the top, then making repeated steel-trowel passes, by hand or with a power trowel, as the slab sets. It's also called a steel-trowel or hard-trowel finish.

Where does a smooth concrete finish work best?

Interior floors, basements, garages and commercial warehouses, along with patio floors where a clean look matters most. It's easy to sweep and mop. Because it can be slippery when wet, we usually recommend a brush or exposed aggregate finish for driveways, walkways and steps instead.

Is smooth concrete slippery?

It can be when wet, since a steel-trowel finish closes the surface and leaves little texture. That's why we recommend brush or exposed aggregate finishes for driveways, walkways and steps. Indoors and under cover, where the floor stays dry, a smooth finish is practical and easy to clean.

Can a smooth finish be made less slippery?

Somewhat. A sealer with a slip-resistant additive leaves fine grit on the surface, and keeping the floor clean and dry helps too. For areas that regularly get wet, though, a textured brush or exposed aggregate finish gives more dependable traction than any treatment applied afterward.

What's the difference between hand and power troweling?

Both compact and smooth the surface as the concrete sets. Hand trowels suit small slabs and edges; a power trowel's spinning blades finish large floors, like garages and warehouses, faster and more evenly. Many slabs get both: machine passes in the field and hand work at the edges.

Do smooth concrete floors need a vapor barrier?

Interior slabs poured on the ground usually do. A vapor barrier beneath the slab limits moisture rising through the floor, which matters in basements and for any flooring or coating added later. We'll specify what your slab needs based on where it is and how it's used.

Will a smooth finish show cracks or marks?

More readily than a textured finish, since there's no texture to disguise them. All concrete can develop hairline cracks, so we compact the base and cut control joints at planned spacing to guide where shrinkage cracks form. Trowel marks and slight color variation are normal in finished concrete.

How do I clean a smooth concrete floor?

Sweep or dust-mop it regularly and damp-mop it with a pH-neutral cleaner, avoiding harsh acids that can etch the surface. A sealer makes the floor easier to clean and helps it resist stains, especially in garages and workshops where oil and chemicals are common. Reseal as it wears.
