Pavers: The Top 4 Reasons People Love Them

Pavers outperform poured concrete on repairability, movement tolerance, design range and long-term value — here's why Portland homeowners keep choosing them.

Pavers have become the default choice for patios, driveways and walkways across the Portland metro — and not just because of how they look. Here are the four reasons homeowners consistently give us.

1. They can be repaired without replacing everything

This is the practical advantage that matters most over a twenty-year horizon.

When poured concrete cracks, stains or settles, your options are patching (visible) or replacing the slab (expensive). When a paver is damaged — a dropped tool, an oil stain, a utility trench — you lift that paver, replace it, and re-sand the joint. The repair is invisible and costs a fraction of a slab replacement.

It also means future access is cheap. If a line has to be run under a paver driveway, the surface can be taken up and reinstated. Under concrete, it gets cut and patched.

2. They tolerate ground movement

Pavers are a flexible system. Instead of one rigid slab that must either stay perfectly still or crack, a paver field is thousands of individual units sitting on a compacted base with sand-filled joints.

When the ground moves — and in our clay soils with wet winters and freeze-thaw cycles, it moves — that flexibility lets the surface accommodate small shifts without fracturing. It is the same reason interlocking pavement is specified for ports and airport aprons.

Concrete's failure mode is a crack. A paver system's failure mode is usually a settled area that can be lifted, re-based and relaid.

3. The design range is genuinely wide

Pavers come in a broad range of colors, sizes, textures and finishes, which means the surface can be matched to the architecture rather than fighting it.

Common ways to use that range:

  • Pattern: running bond, herringbone (strongest for driveways), basketweave, ashlar
  • Borders: a soldier course or contrasting band that frames the field and reads as custom
  • Blends: multi-size modular blends that avoid the uniform look of a single unit
  • Transitions: a different pattern or color to distinguish a walkway from a parking area

You can also mix in permeable pavers where drainage or stormwater code is a factor — increasingly common on Portland-area projects.

4. They hold their value

A properly installed paver surface installed over a correct base routinely lasts decades with routine maintenance — sweeping, occasional joint sand, and periodic cleaning or sealing if you want the color to stay saturated.

Because they are repairable and because they are widely recognized as a premium surface, they tend to hold value at resale better than a patched concrete driveway of the same age.

The caveat: installation is everything

None of the above is true if the base is wrong.

A paver project is roughly 80% what happens before the first paver is set: excavation depth, base material, compaction in lifts, grading for drainage, bedding layer, and edge restraint. Pavers installed over an inadequate base will settle and rut no matter how good the units are.

That is why we are ICPI and CMHA certified and why we spend most of our schedule below the surface. If you are comparing bids, compare base specifications — not just the paver.
